If your fiance came to the USA with a fiance visa, or has held another visa (student, visitor, etc...) for a while, then this option is appropriate. This process is what is required to obtain a 'Green Card' for the holder of a visa. Once obtained, your spouse can work and travel. The initial card is valid for 2 years.

After holding a 'Green Card' for 21 months, you must apply for Removal of Conditions before 24 months passes. The result is a 10 year card, rather than the initial 2 year card.
